2005 Mitsubishi Outlander 2WD 2.4L 164000 miles cooling fans do not turn off

Showing 2 out of 3 Posts | Show 1 Hidden Posts
Question From Zandermart on 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander 2WD 2.4L 164000 miles cooling fans do not turn off

Both cooling fans come on when engine is turned on and remain on until engine is turned off. The A/C compressor kicks in when fan is turned on and the green light on the A/C button will not turn of when depressed. I'm wondering how much this effects gas mileage.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Trying to figure out if there is something wrong here. Is the blower switch turned off when the engine cooling fans are running all the time and the ac compressor is kicking on?

Response From Hammer Time

it will effect it a small amount but that is the way it is designed to run. the compressor removes moisture from the air in the cabin.

Galant ac pressure question

Showing 2 out of 20 Posts | Show 18 Hidden Posts
Question From Briangillen on Galant ac pressure question

Any advice with this ac problem on my 2004 mitsubishi galant would be appreciated. The high side pressure will hold steady at 150 but slowly drop to 100. Then the compressor will kick in and bring it back up to 150. (Low side holds steady around 45. Outside temp is 90.) But it never blows cold.

Thanks in advance for the help. Brian

Response From Hammer Time

OK, since you have the correct charge we can analyze the pressure problem. What it's telling me is that there is a restriction in the system. You can verify this by feeling the temp of the liquid line at idle. It should be warm to the touch but if you feel no heat at all, that tells you there is no refrigerant moving. What I usually do in that case is replace the dryer and expansion valve and that usually resolves the issue.

Response From Briangillen

Yeah, I thought there might be a restriction too. The expansion valve and drier were replaced as I have tried to find a solution to this problem. So I guess that only leaves the evaporator or the line from the compressor??? Is there any way to verify which is the problem? Thanks!

Response From Discretesignals

Did you evacuate it before you recharged it?

Response From Briangillen

Yeah it was evacuated before the expansion valve was installed.

Response From Discretesignals

Was it evacuated after you installed the valve before you recharged it?

Response From Briangillen

No, not after the expansion valve was replaced.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

That might be your problem then. Evacuation has to be done before you recharge the system after all repairs are made to the system. If you don't evacuate, you'll have a bunch of air and moisture in the system. The moisture will ice up the expansion valve and the air will overheat the ac compressor.

You need to evacuate the system for at least 40 minutes using a good vacuum pump. The system should hold vacuum with the manifold valves closed.

Response From Briangillen

Okay, thanks. I going to try it and I'll let you all know how I make out. Brian

Response From Briangillen

One last question before I get started. I couldn't find the exact amount of oil to add, I've heard rule of thumb is one ounce per component replaced. Anyone know the recommended amount to add? Thanks!

Response From Hammer Time

That depends on which components.
What did you change?

Response From Briangillen

I just did the condenser and the dryer.

Response From Hammer Time

I would put about 3 ounces.

Response From Briangillen

Ok, changed the condenser and the drier. While I was at it I used some flush on the lines. (I disconnected them so I would send flush through the expansion valve or the compressor.) then I evacuated and recharged with 19 oz. Sadly, still no cold air. Pressure now 55/110. So frustrating!

Response From Hammer Time

If that is your idle pressures, what are they at 2000RPM?

Response From Hammer Time

I have never seen an evaporator do this, although I have seen some hoses do that, sometimes a condenser.

Response From Hammer Time

Exactly how much refrigerant is in the system?

Response From Briangillen

I put 22 oz. in.

Response From Hammer Time

Year and engine size?

Response From Briangillen

It is a 2004 with a 2.4l engine.

2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS Horrid Noise on Cold Start

Question From kristen on 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS Horrid Noise on Cold Start

Hello-

I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS 3.0 liter, manual transmission. Car makes awful noise only on cold start up's, noise will fade out after car starts to warm up. Makes the noise more so in the winter, and less in the summer. I was hoping the Timing belt, Tensioner, Pulley, belts, plug, wire, distributor cap/rotor job would clear up the issue, but for some reason it didn't. As long as the car is heated up the noise won't happen, like I said only does it on cold starts. I have always changed the oil myself, and I use castrol synthetic with a K&N oil filter. I guess when the garage did all that work they changed my oil so I'm guessing they probably used some cheap oil, and filter. All my research I have done has indicated faulty tensioner (but this was just replaced), lifters, or my starter. I have posted the noise all over the mitsubishi eclipse forums, and this is what everyone tells me.. The garage I brought it 5 months ago tried figuring it out and couldn't the only thing they could think of was it was my lifters, and it just takes longer for my oil to get to the top end of the engine hence the reason why the noise stops once it warms up. I said well then should I replace the oil pump and they said no. The garage also took my main exterior belt off, and started the car to try and determine if it was an external part making the noise or the engine. When the belt was off there wasn't a noise. They put the belt back on, and started it the following day because the car had to be cooled back down, and the noise was present. I have posted a video of it to Youtube if you would like to take a listen to it. Just go to youtube and in the search bar type: 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS noise. My post should be the first one on the page. It is 2:58 minutes long., and it is by kristenl2784 (me). It started around 80K, and is now at 114K. All work that was just done to it, was done less than a month ago. So two garages as of right now have really no explanation for it, or they really don't want to waste there time looking more into it. Below is the link to my video as well if it doesn't work just type in what I mentioned earlier in the search bar of youtube.

Thanks for any Help!

Response From GC

Something isnt making sense to me. If there was no noise with the belt off, then should be something that the belt is driving or possibly the crank pulley/balancer. And the belt couldnt be put back on until it was cool?

That said... That doesnt sound much like a pulley or accessory to me. Or lifters... From the crappy sound quality on youtube, it sounds like an exhaust leak? But i wouldnt trust a sound diagnosis over the interwebs.

This shouldnt be hard to figure out. Try another shop?

Response From kristen

Hello they did put the belt back on but waited for the car to be cool again before starting it back up. The noise is only there on a cold start. I understand what you're saying they should have been able to start it right away after putting the belt back on.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You are calling this a "horrid" noise and just said it's done it as far back as last Summer and nobody can tell you what it is? New techs needed. Damage may already be done just cold makes it worse??

T

Response From kristen

I also forgot to add that my main external belt was replaced, and so wasn't my idler pulley.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Is the ac compressor clutch engaged when it is making that noise?

Response From kristen

The AC or Heat can be on or off, and doesn't make a difference. Also the steering wheel can be straight or turning and that doesn't make a difference either.

Response From Discretesignals

Someone is going to have to get in there with a mechanic's stethoscope and pinpoint the area or source of the noise.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

OK - Seems to be proven that it's a belt driven item making this noise OR some belts are noisy all by themselves. Depending on where in NH it's been nasty cold (close to MA temps except White Mountains really suk sometimes)

Just because some items on belt have been done neither rules them out but should and if that much noise this isn't rocket science to isolate which item on the belt system is the culprit. Surprised whatever hasn't broken totally removing any of this guessing,

T

Response From kristen

I live in NH weather is crazy it changes all the time could be in the negative single digits, to positive single digits and sometimes up to 30 or 40 during the winter months.

Response From kristen

Right its been to a couple garages and they can't seem to figure it out. I'm guessing it's more external because when they took the belt off the noise wasn't there on cold start. The next day on cold start they started it with the belt on and the noise was there. Since it started making the noise winter tends to be when it comes about more often, and lasts about 5 - 8 minutes then fades out and you can no longer hear it and it sounds fine and runs fine. The car wont make the noise the rest of the day unless it becomes fully cooled down. During the summer it doesn't happen all the time and doesn't last very long if it does 30 seconds to tops a minute or two.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

How cold is this cold start? What viscosity of synthetic Castrol never mind brand the viscosity counts big time. Was it making the noise when belt was taken off then not making the noise in front of you? If so and techs didn't notice that you need new techs.

GC mentioned possible exhaust which many would get quiet when warm and should be ruled in or out.

Right now I doubt the oil viscosity is correct but total guess and don't know how cold you are talking about yet either,

Response From kristen

5w 30 is the oil I use

Timing belt / marks alignment & TDC of cylinder #1

Showing 2 out of 8 Posts | Show 6 Hidden Posts
Question From nwfixer on Timing belt / marks alignment & TDC of cylinder #1

Is aligning the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft enough when changing a timing belt?

I have a 1989 Dodge Raider (Mitsubishi Montero) and I am in the process of replacing the timing belt. I've successfully lined up all three timing marks and installed the belt, but I've read on a couple of forums that I should also check and make sure the #1 cylinder is at top dead center. Others have mentioned the position of the distributor rotor as something to watch. While I understand caution is needed when doing this repair these additional steps don't make make sense to me.

My knowledge of engines is far from complete, but from what I've learned it does not seem possible for the #1 piston to be in the wrong position when the timing mark on the crankshaft is correctly aligned. The #1 piston should come to TDC each time the timing mark is lined up - if it doesn't I have much bigger problems than a timing belt. Is that correct or am I missing something fundamental?

Likewise for the distributor rotor. I've verified the rotor turns once for each turn of the camshaft that drives it. It doesn't seem possible to have the rotor in the incorrect position if the camshaft timing mark is in the correct position.

Is verifying the alignment of the timing marks sufficient or do I need to take additional steps to make sure this repair is done correctly?

Response From Hammer Time

You're right. That stuff only matters when installing the distributor.

Response From nwfixer

Thanks much for the reply. I'll stop worrying now...

Response From Discretesignals

What most don't understand is that when you go to align your marks the piston for number one is going to be TDC no matter which stroke. Which stroke it is on, compression or exhaust, when the piston is top dead center is determined by the position of the camshaft(s).

As long as you don't remove the distributor and your marks on the cam sprockets and crank gear are lined up correctly. It should start right up. Even if you were to have your camshaft spockets 180 degrees from the marks, but your crank was TDC, it will still start up and run.

Response From nwfixer Top Rated Answer

It started right up and runs better than it has in years. Thanks much for the help. Now I just have to figure out why the AC compressor won't come on. If it's not one thing it's another.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Compressor - if it gets power could be that clutch air gap is excessive. Free to check. Should be too tight or close to a standard folded biz card if it gets power and too wide it wont pull in. A careful tap on outer head would make it engage if all else if right,

T

Response From nwfixer

Turns out to be either low pressure in the AC system or a pressure switch failure. Starting a new thread on this one.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This will be read only now but do make new threads for separate issues. Hard for us or anyone to follow if too much in one thread,

T
