Question From big D on ac compressor

I have a 2002 dodge dakota the air compressor blows cold air but kicks in and out every 30 seconds or so it seems to do it more when its hot? should i change compressor? or change compressor, dryer and expansion valve dont have a lot of cash but i think i can do it myself i can get a vacume pump and gauges. Thanks for any help!

Response From Hammer Time

You have no reason to believe the compressor is bad yet. The first thing you need to do is to make sure it has the proper amount of refrigerant in the system by having it completely recovered and recharged with the exact weighed charge.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Virtually ALL of these leaked at evaporators easily still a common issue with what's left of Chrysler designs.

Snow ball problem if ignored. Low charge due to leak, cycling compressor then lack of lube to it the system will be a problem or if it's been recklessly boosted up frequently too late for a lasting fix without a real investment in having dependable A/C in these,

Question From Joseph123 on Re: 2003 Jeep Liberty - AC compressor replace

Hi my name is Joseph and I also have a Jeep liberty the same as you Im a wrking stundent, so i have little money to afford the whole kit so i just purchase the compressor from off line and im going to do all the wrk my self so what do i do before i put the compressor in.. I know i need to flush out the system to try to get all of the trast out rite but do i do that with the old ac compressor still on and the jeep running r do i replace the compressor and then flush the system with the jeep on.. help me out if you can i really need some direction.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

How did you determine you needed a compressor?

BTW - you tagged onto about year old thread so it's moved and on it's own now,

T

Response From Hammer Time

Hey Tom
We must have been moving it at the same time because I detached it from that old thread and then went back and found a "moved question" link like it was a new question when I moved it.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Yup - working at the same time. We need to know more about this vehicle. If a second compressor in its life there will be more work. When it's just a leak and caught for the "Black Death" as it's called you can't cut corners and get away with it for a while but problems will return sooner unless you do it right.

The most common failure IMO for a compressor is lack of lubrication and a leaking system can't carry enough oil so they burn up.

Not so much where I live but warmer climates the dang things are working hard and doesn't take long to burn one out.

Jeeps and many Chrysler products are well known for the dreaded evaporator leaking! Big job to swap most of those which is why I asked why you thought it needed a compressor. Fast leaks can shut system down quickly with less or perhaps no damage to the compressor,

T

Response From Hammer Time

I have moved you question to start a new thread of your own. We don't address multiple vehicles within the same thread.

As we consistently tell people that when a compressor fails it tears up inside and all the debris spreads through the system, especially the condenser. Some condensers are designed so they can be flushed and some cannot be flushed. If you simply replace the compressor, you not only haven't found the cause of the original failure but you now have a plugged up system so the life expectancy of your new compressor is basically nothing. If you chose a reman instead of new compressor, your chance are even worse.
It takes a special chemical and a lot of air pressure to flush the system and if it's equipped with a bypass type condenser it cannot be flushed and will have to be replaced.

1992 chrysler mini van 4 cyl manual water pump

Question From cbr651192 on 1992 chrysler mini van 4 cyl manual water pump

need some advice on R & R water pump on this van looks like timing gear has to be removed what is involved in that looks tough and will i mess up timing is there anyway to just loosen middle bolt on that gear to get access to the last bolt on the water pump if not how complicated is this what has to be removed when i started this i figured a water pump how hard can it be ,i cant believe an auto maker would do this its a freaking water pump why would they put it behind the timing belt what idiots

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

If this is a 2.2 or 2.5Lt, you don’t have to touch the timing belt to do the water pump. You do have to remove the AC compressor, alternator and their aluminum bracket; that’s to gain access to the water pump housing. After removing the housings retaining bolts you remove the housing and pump as an assembly. Change the pump and housing seal on the bench and then reassemble.
Yes if you remove the timing belt you’ll have to reset valve and intermediate shaft timing.

Car cool -> A/C cool ... car hot -> A/C hot

Question From mactube on Car cool -> A/C cool ... car hot -> A/C hot

Hi, I have a problem the I don not know the answer to..
When I turn my car ( 2001 Chrysler Sebring 2.7) in the morning and turn on the A/C right away.. the A/C will blow cold air within seconds and stay on until i turn the engine off.
When I then get back in the car and turn on the A/C it will only blow warm air. Obviously there is not a leak in the system and compressor seams to be ok to ( even though the compressor is pretty loud when A/C is turned on) .
Doe's somebody know what that could be ?

Response From Hammer Time

Your first step is to determine if the compressor is still running when the A/C quits working.

Response From mactube

Ok, so when it starts blowing hot air, the compressor is off.
So I guess the compressor is broken !?
But why would the A/C ( Compressor) come on in the Morning when the Engine is cold ?

Response From Hammer Time

No, that doesn't necessarily mean the compressor is bad. It proves it is an electrical issue but there are dozens of possible causes and it needs to be troubleshooted when the failure is present. The first step will be to determine if the compressor is still receiving power when it goes off.

Response From Discretesignals

even though the compressor is pretty loud when A/C is turned on

That isn't a good sign. What kind of noise is it making?

Response From mactube

sound a little bit like metal on metal .. like it needs oil ( its not very loud but not a smooth sound..

Response From Discretesignals

You might want to take the compressor off and see if there is any oil in it. It might be too late for the compressor. If the compressor is knocking, it might be on the verge of coming apart. If the clutch gap is too wide, the field coil won't be able to pull the clutch plate. Might be worse when it gets hot because the electrical resistance in the field coil goes up. I'd worry about the noise first and the electrical problem last.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

? Metal on metal noise? Only with A/C use stated up top but not the typical failing compressor noise to me. The extra load on anything on the belt could be misleading for the source of that noise. Can anything odd be observed? If compressor itself it's not a good sign,

T

Response From mactube

@Tom Greenleaf nothing else can be observed except that the a/c really comes on every morning when the engine is cold and then when the engine gets hot the a/c will shot off.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You don't just "top off" oil for A/C and yes the charge of refrigerant (freon) would be recovered and best weighed how much came out. Model year 2001 if untouched since new would have normally lost some refrigerant which varies from insignificant to about total loss or the car could have already needed something along the way.

There are a lot a variables to cause this. I suggest to take it for professional diagnosis to really find out if this is a simple issue/problem or a more involved repair is needed.

A/C is not very DIY friendly and in fact VERY costly when wrong things are done,

T

Response From Discretesignals

Tom's right. There are many variables to this. The noise could be something outside the compressor. If the compressor itself is making noise, it can knock from lack of oiling. Lack of oiling could be from low oil in the system from a leak or not enough refrigerant to move the oil around. A bad reed valve, high side pressure too high, or a mechanical problem in the compressor could cause that symptom too. You really want to determine why the compressor is noisy before it grenades if it hasn't already started coming apart. I would be more worried about determining the reason for the noise than the electrical problem at this point.

Response From mactube

@Tom Greenleaf and @Discretesignals
since it's expected to be an electrical problem.
I'm assuming this will be inside the compressor not on the wireing of the system. So I tend to just buy a used compressor for 80 bucks . Most places I have been to charge around the same just to get a diagnostic ( which will later be applies to the repair costs which could be in the hundreds... What to you guys think?

Response From Hammer Time

NO, NO, NO..................... BAD IDEA

Response From mactube

OK, so it looks like its not the blend door ( even though thats what the diagnostic ( computer) says, because the when the A/C is not blowing cold anymore and I open the hood . The Compressor stopped! Since I have the feeling that the A/C always stops working after a 20 at least 20 min ride when the motor is hot .. is it possible that the wireing or maybe a plug, hook up is broken ??

Response From Tom Greenleaf

If compressor stops that ends cool air.

You need pressures when it is engaged. If it's noisy it's probably junk but won't end with just that. If pressures are way off it will shut down,

T

Response From mactube

@Tom Greenleaf
As absurde as @Hammer Time 's post seams ... I might follow his advise after I take the car to a shop who doesn't charge me for the diagnoses . If they can't identify the real problem . I leaf it alone... I'm happy with my car but kind of over it.. ... there are to may issues coming up . Will have to get a new car by the end of the year of beginning of next anyway.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

mactube: I didn't fully re-read whole thread now long. This has been close to a year now and still fighting with this?! If you only seek FREE everything you will have a hard time.

FYI if you didn't already know ALL regulars volunteer their time sharing their experience and training over many years - 100s perhaps combined. If you don't care for suggestions by any particular regular (usually a moderator) then you are free to go to the whole rest of the web, nobody is forcing you to be here.

If you are getting a new car soon then why bother too much for just A/C now? I'm in MA and season will just end in a flash sometime soon. Others it could be anytime of year,

T

Response From Hammer Time

You were advised to leave this car alone. You are only making matters a lot worse.

Response From mactube

Thanks @Discetesignals.. I'm replaying here because I had problems to find the regular post option..

Now , that I have recovered my old post and still have the same problem .. I would be so happy if every body who was involved in the discussion would join again..
Like I said, I still have the same problems with my 2001 Chrysler Sebering , , except for now I can exclude a compressor problem.. since I got it exchanged .. Now.. Sometimes it comes on and sometime it doesn't.
I have been to several shops and Mechanics most of them tell me they can't help me I have to go to an A/C specialist or to the Chrysler Dealer Ship. I have not spent quite some money and definitely don't want to go to the Chrysler Dealer Ships because they charge 150 bucks just for the diagnosis. The car error code reader says : Blend Door Shorted to the ground . So I believe it's an electrical problem. Does somebody have a suggestion !??

Response From Hammer Time

No, you can't. You threw a junkyard compressor at is. That is not even remotely close to being fixed correctly.

If you think the issue is all blend door now, then pinch off one of the heater hoses with something and see if it gets cold then.

Response From Discretesignals

I agree with HT. If possible, pinch off a heater hose and see if your problem goes away. That will tell you if the blend door has some sort of issue.

Response From mactube

We are talking about the heater hose on the compressor right !? To pinch off the heater hose from the compressor is kind of hard ( to reach ) and the hose are very tough.

But I don't think its the blend door ( even though thats what the error says) because when the AC is not working, the compressor stopped ( metal part on a/c - cold hose is not cold like it is when the AC is working) , so since that's the same problem I had before , I doubt that it's the acctual compressor ( unless the used one I put in there has coincidenly the same problem)

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

No, no, no. .................. The heater hoses going into the firewall.
The AC compressor has nothing to do with the heater.

Response From Discretesignals

the compressor stopped ( metal part on a/c - cold hose is not cold like it is when the AC is working)

Doesn't sound like a blend door issue now.

Couple of things you can check to see why the compressor is shutting off.

Checking system pressures (high and low side) with a manifold gauge would be the first step.

If static and dynamic pressures look good, then you have some sort of electrical problem.

Response From mactube

Thx @Hammer Time and @Discretesignals will do and be back on here shortly.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Used - NO! Not even remanufactured! To save a buck with likely failure of used you'll spend many times that to correct. Used compressors are handy for when the assembly (compressor and clutch together) is needed for the belt system with it just being a dummy pulley again and forget operational A/C forever for that vehicle,

T

Response From Hammer Time

Nobody yet even has the slightest indication that this problem is even being caused by the compressor. The idea of changing a compressor simply to avoid and actual diagnostic is just ridiculous.

The evacuate and recharge alone would cost more than the diagnostic and could actually make the issue much worse.

Response From mactube

@Discretesignals this might get a little to technical for me..
it's very much possible that the oil is low in inside the compressor ... that's how it sounds like.
So if the compressor will be taking off to top off the oil, I'm assuming I'm loosing all the freon correct ?

Response From Hammer Time

No, I don't recommend taking the compressor off. not only is it dangerous, but you would open a can of worms that you can't deal with. Have it diagnosed professionally.

Response From Discretesignals

I forgot this is probably a DIY noob. HT is right. If you don't have the tooling and experience with working on ac, you should take it in.

Response From mactube

Ok, looks like I can't isolate the problem by my self so I will have to give it to a shop to trouble shoot it !? If it's an electrical error ..

Response From mactube

ok @Hammer Time makes sense... thought I'm still hearing it when it starts blowing hot air.. but I actually never got out of the car and opened the hood when the hot air kicks in..
will be back on here asap..

Question From judiann on Re: 2006 pt cruiser problems

I have a PT Cruiser 2006. It has already had the left wheel barring replaced. Has 57000 miles on it. Now, for the last few weeks it feels like it's going to die on me when it stands still, like waiting for a light. It's better when I turn the A/C and/or the radio off. My mechanic says he doesn't know what it is but he said it won't die on me. He put some green foam (or something) in the line to clean it out in case some dirt got in there. Driving up to NY from the south I met a woman who also has the same exact problem and has for a year now. She says the car hasn't died on her. No more Chryslers for me! What's going on?

Response From Sidom

In addition to Nick's suggestions have your tech get a can of throttle body cleaner & a little brush and clean the throttle plate real good. If they get coked up too bad you can get this problem.........

Response From nickwarner Top Rated Answer

Check your idle air control motor. It can cause your idle to surge. When your AC is on the ECM raises the idle slightly to keep the AC compressor turning faster and compensate for the added load, which can explain why turning on the AC is helping it run better
