Question From utfootball4 on AC Compressor

We test drove a used 2006 325i bmw that had 80k and while driving the car it would jerk when at idle - only when the AC was on. This is what the dealership had to say:

Its the air compressor turning on and off. When the set temp is reached, it deactivates the ac compressor, and when temp drops-turns ac compressor back on. This causes a load on the engine since the compressor is driven by the belts of the main crankshaft. So when ac compressor turns on, it puts a load on the engine and that is what your feeling.

Response From utfootball4

nothing to do with AC - its the ignition coil..

Response From Tom Greenleaf

A/C and ignition coil - WRONG!!!!

To heck with that dealer. Car is made to cover the load and maintain idle. Vehicle is either way overcharged to cover a problem or if not now probably has a seizing compressor,

Can you please explain what you mean by "overcharged to cover a problem"?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It may be a leaker and dealer may have overcharged it just to let it leak down and work and you can't get away with that as compressor could be choking on liquid when it should be vapor.

Can't say much for sure on this and no telling who has done what? Big bucks to fix A/C so if not purchased yet pass on that car. Could be that engine can't compensate for the load and be another huge buck problem??

I'll see, i doubt it's anything engine related. Car drives great and only does this when the AC is on and car is at idle and it doesn't do it non stop.

Response From Hammer Time

You really don't need to keep 2 threads going on the same subject.

Response From utfootball4

BTW, tech didn't find any issues with it and car did not throw any warning codes yesterday.

Hope pic showed directly? If there aren't any identifying #s on it, it can still be a guess as same looking unit could be different to unusable even if it fit,

Response From funnyglenn

It has some markings on it, 0 41-1, A 17, RX20080415

Response From Hammer Time

Don't mean a thing

Response From Tom Greenleaf

What do you want to do with the thing? Differences include the clutch may not have the right # of grooves as another and appears new. It may lack or have a thermal pressure cut out switch on the back or a plug there for the application if used or not and this one if case doesn't have the spot for that plug for the switch is useless even if otherwise fits.

Until you can peg exactly what application it's for it's just a core IMO and might get a few bucks for it. Otherwise if you don't need it and no clue it's one heck of a heavy paper weight,

Response From Discretesignals

My guess is a Denso 10PA compressor. The harness connector looks like it would be for a Toyota or Lexus.

Response From Hammer Time

It looks like a Sanden but I couldn't tell you what it fits.
