(NUI) - Volkswagen's 1999 EuroVan proves that a sound design is worth perfecting. This latest evolution of the original Volkswagen "bus" concept, is a thoroughly modern, full-powered, front-wheel-drive platform that continues the Volkswagen tradition of building highly versatile vans for families with active lifestyles.

The 1999 EuroVan comes from Hanover, Germany, with even more safety features and standard equipment than last year's U.S. model. Both GLS and Multivan (MV) models further expand on comfort, safety and functionality with versatile interiors and a distinctively European combination of ride quality and style.

Up front, VW's award-winning six-cylinder VR6 engine provides 177 pound-feet of torque at 3,200 rpm and 140 horsepower at 4,500 rpm to give the new EuroVan a 4,400 pound (braked) trailer towing capacity or a nearly 1,000-pound cargo-hauling capacity in its expansive interior. Front wheel drive, low-speed traction control, four-wheel independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel ABS disc brakes ensure that EuroVan drivers enjoy the typically excellent handling and control Volkswagens are famous for.

The latest EuroVan offers improved torsional rigidity and protects occupants with dual front airbags, side impact beams, three-point safety belts and daytime running lights. The new model also adds sound-deadening insulation, power windows with one-touch up/down and pinch protection, and a pollen and dust filter for ventilation.

Additional standard equipment includes in-dash air conditioning, power door locks, cruise control, a six-speaker stereo, programmable intermittent wipers, heated windshield-washer nozzles, power outside mirrors and a four-speed automatic transmission.

The optional Weekender Package for the MV combines the day-to-day functionality of the seven-seat GLS model with the overnight capabilities of the EuroVan Camper. Features include a pop-up roof with two-person bed, full-swiveling captain seats, window screens, fixed left-hand rear facing seat with built-in refrigerator and a second battery. EuroVan MV also seats seven, but has separate rear-facing seats positioned back-to-back with front passenger seats. A triple rear bench seat with bed conversion is also standard.

The famed Camper version of the EuroVan continues to be available for the U.S. market and can seat up to six passengers with an optional, removable two-person center bench seat. A new option for the 1999 is the companion seat, which serves as a single-seat alternative to the optional double center bench. Of course, the standard rear double bench seat still makes into a bed.

Other features of the Winnebago conversion package include the familiar pop-up roof, full-swiveling captain seats and a two-burner LP gas stove.

All EuroVan models include a generous warranty covering corrosion perforation, powertrain, scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance.
