99 Ford Ranger Dome Light does not turn off when doors are closed. Sometimes door ajar light on with or without chime. Have had it fixed twice and doing it again. Please advise.

Can't say for your exact veh but older ones used the door jam for the lights and the latch for a door ajar notice.

Just a thought - might be some wiring where they bend in the door jam area hidden by the rubber cover. Tricky to move it and see but if you have some miles it's a trouble spot, Good luck Tom Greenleaf

There is no switch in the door jam. How do you get access to the switch in the door latch?

most probably piggybacked on the latch itself, interior door panel removal and possible latch removal to access.
my brother has an 01 f250 superduty that in hot weather shows door ajar when driving and the interior lights stay on after closing/locking doors - i haven't taken it apart yet but will have to before summer (the dealer said the switch is on the latch on his truck so yours is probably similar/same)

Until you fix the switch you may want to remove the fuse (if it doesn't disable something you need) or take the bulbs out (use a glove they'll be hot) to save dead battery.

Easy on the door panel. It's got tricks to hide how it's fastened and not easy to fix it if broken. Good luck, Tom

How does one shut off the obnoxious ringing when the door ajar sensor inadverantly goes off? I've tried taking out the fuse, but it also controls the speedometer, the dome light, and the wipers.

Thanks

Well I have fixed it. At least for now.
I took a can of WD-40 and gave the latch mechinsim a good coating and cleaning. After that is has been working for the last couple of weeks. I think it may be related to sticky grease and dirt preventing the switch on the door latch from sensing that the door latch is closed.

Jon - they can be unplugged. Find it while it's ringing usually under dash on left side. Check that is doesn't effect anything else - it shouldn't.

Don - glad you are all set with the magic of good old WD-40.

Jon - no harm in giving that same trick a try with panel off. I never get inside a door without spraying all the moving parts even if in there for another reason.

I have a nephew's 88 Town Car and need to take the panel off as latch is frozen up and won't unlock in or out. The panels are hard to get off with the door shut!

I just bought a 1999 ranger yesterday. I too found that the dome light and door ajar light stayed on. I pulled the fuse to remedy the problem temporarily. Apparently WD-40 is the trick. I will give it a try tonight and let you know if I have any sucess. By the way what are the black metal tabs on the door above the latch?

When you say to spray WD40 on the "latch mechanisim", do you mean the mechanisim on the exterior of the door, or do I have to remove the door panel and spray stuff inside the door?

Thanks!

I thought it sounded kind of strange, but I just sprayed it on the exterior "latch mechanism" and it worked. I'm not sure if it's just coincidence, but I've had the same (off and on) problem since I bought my 97 ranger and damn, it works. It's been years since I've been able to use the dome light (unplugged fuse) Kind irritates me though, i took apart the door paneling and even messed with the wiring, but this worked. I noticed that the original post is old, but keep it on here.
P.S. anybody know anything about the gas gage not working?

That is the answer! WD-40. I'm thinking there is some kind of magnetic concection with the latch on the door and the post on the cab. It must be cleaning the dust and dirt of the sensor so the connection is made. Thanks everyone!!!

Help

Can this module be accessed by removing the panel under the steering wheel. If it can, how does anyone go about removing the panel? How many screws need to be removed? Where are these screws? Any pop in/out pins after removing the screws?

Any info would be helpful. I just do not want to take the truck to a dealer for something I used to do myself. Of course, it was simpler then.

Thanks
