We have a 1994 Dodge shadow and just had the head gasket replaced and the temp gauge still moves a little and the heat does not feel as hot as it was before. could it need to be bled?

Yes check that system is full of proper coolant. If temp gauge works at all it's probably hooked up right electically. Could just be a failed thermostat right now. If car wicked overheated from head gasket I would want a new t-stat. Good luck, Tom Greenleaf

We had a new temp gauge put in when they did the head gasket. They said it might just be air and need to be burped. How important is that and can it do any damage if we don't take it in?

Hi Dina - if the temp gauge is reading low it's almost always the thermostat at fault. They are cheap and fairly easy on most cars.

This "burping" of air does exist. You need to add if needed 50/50 anti-freeze to radiator cap when pressure is down and it's cooled off. It will self purge air to radiator and watch the recovery tank - as it cycles between warm and cold it will take coolant out of that tank and put the air in it. That's too slow - fill at radiator after system has been drained for any reason and re check it a couple times.

It's easy to check a bad t-stat without tools! Just start the car with hood open and feel the upper hose to radiator. It should stay cold to the touch until t-stat opens to cool engine. If it's warm too soon - t-stat is letting the car start to cool itself too soon and the only fix for that is a new t-stat. Then you are back to making sure the air is out again.
Always keep your hands away from fans or other moving parts - and when normal the upper hose is generally too hot to hold on to for very long.

I most recently had a part in my car fixed, which caused all my radiator fluid to leak out (don't know the name of it, sorry) and my car to overheat. Well anyways, the guy who worked on it had to reattach my fan because it apparently wasn't attached right to my vehicle. Well we hoped that after it had been fixed that my Low Coolant light would shut off, but it hasn't. Everything else works just fine, except now I'm a lot more cautious of my car than before, since the temp gauge continues to fluctuate between the middle line and the line before it. Should I worry about it overheating again? I mean the mechanic told me to let my car run for about 3 hours, with the radiator cap off to let the air bubbles out, which then should shut the Low Coolant light off. I was just mostly wondering if I should worry about that temp gauge moving passed that center line, or am I alright? By the way, I drive a '92 Chevy Beretta.
