Message: Hi folks,
I brand new to this site and DO have time and the experience to respond to many inquiries. I'm retired but still ASE Certified - solved a lot of general automotive problems and some eluded my expertise which is normal I think. I'm from Massachusetts, USA which deals with a lot of rust problems that I did get pretty good at. Am a general mechanic including A/C. Love older cars and have NEVER owned a new one and only paid for a few! Hold a College degree in automotive Science and am happy to share what I might know to help you out with your concerns. If I get overwhelmed I'll just have to limit responses.
It always helps to list as much info as you can for your inquiries. Include mileage and you general locale as that can really help.
Good luck getting your problems fixed, there certainly are several well qualified folks who respond here. Happy Motoring, Tom Greenleaf

Message: Hi Tom
you could be the man to help me... as trying to trawl the net for info is so very time consuming..
I have an Isuzu Trooper 3.1 turbo diesel.1993. mk2
the problem is that the alternator does not, on occasion appear to be charging.. i.e. the lights flash up on the dash occassionally and sometimes stay on ..then all of a sudden will pop back to charging.. this happens a lot a low revs, when i stop or slow down at junctions etc..
Have changed a relay that is responsible for some of the regulation of electrics and the alternator is only 5 months old...
what else can it be???
Please help me??
regards Ray

Message: Hi, tom, My name is Emiliano from Argentina. As perhaps you know we didnīt have as much as accesories for cars as you do in Your country. So, my concern is the following: I studied the NOS system and I think the following: would it be posible to install instead of the NOS bottle an oxygen one?. I know that the Nitrogen is used to cool the reaction, but the systems delivers more than 75 HP. What I am trying is to built something for 20 HP approx. What do you think?.

Message: Hi - I have not worked with alternate fuels so can't help you much.
This site deals with regular cars mostly. You may find what you want if you search out there for sites that deal with Hot Rods or Dragsters or Speed Equipment. Hope that helps, gook luck, Tom

Message: Hi John,
I'm a little confused but have some ideas for you.
How old is the battery? If more than 3 or 4 years it's getting old. Will it hold a charge disconnectd? If so it's not likely the battery itself right now.
15V reading with engine running is OK. Right after shut off it should go back to near 12V. A good battery will not drop below 9V when the starter is cranking engine. At idle with lights and rear window defrost on and fan to heater or AC full you should still see at least 13V or perhaps the alternator can't keep up. A lot of full charge to total discharge is hard on both an alt. and even a new battery.
I don't know when they fixed it but the Taurus like cars from Ford had troubles with the ignition switch. Key would come out when you were really not OFF and that could drain battery.
To test for a drain..... Shut everything off, close doors, unplug any hood light, disconnect neg at battery and put your voltmeter between cable and the neg post it should have been on. Reading should NOT be there! Try it - then open a door (Interior lights would be a drain then) and it will read!
If you do have a drain of power, pull fuses one at a time, and breakers, till it reads zero and they at least you know the circuit that has to be checked out.
One more is the fuel pump relay can stay on when car is off? It will keep power to the pump and it can cycle to maintain pressure while you are not watching and wipe out the battery.
The last time I had this problem was with a 87 Taurus and it was the key switch. You could take the key out and it was not in the full off position. I fixed that by marking the exact spot where to pull out the key and problem was solved for years, as long as drivers of it knew that.
Good luck, the 3.0 is a well designed engine and the car is NOT a known problem, but do check for recalls with VIN# in hand, Tom Greenleaf

The truck has never been wrecked, and only yesterday did it start flashing when I replaced the instrument light bulbs and I put it back together...What do u think? Would really be grateful for your help as I dont have much money for dignostics and my wife drives truck and children go to school in it as well, and I am concerned that the bags wont go off if needed, or they will prematurly go off without cause...Thanks, Dave

Message: I am trying to fix wipers on a 99 Isuzu Rodeo. The motor seems to be ok, park switch, etc.
The column switch checks out. The Haynes book mentions an interval module, but I can't find where it is mounted, checked fuse and relay boxes to no avail, any ideas?

Message: Possibly a voltage regulater letting alternator put out too much voltage blowing bulbs. Can check with a voltmeter and should NOT read over about 15V or so but should be above 13.5 or so at idle. Good luck, don't wait if too high as more bulbs will go and some are nasty to replace, Tom Greenleaf
PS: May have hurt your battery if so :-(

Message: First check the owner's manual and see if there's a circuit breaker/relay for just that item - if so replace it.
Next thought is maybe the wiring or motor has gone bad. I believe most wipers have power and you add ground if they have the intermittent feature. The wires that have to bend for a tailgate or hatch for the back can fail right where they bend which is hidden by a rubber snorkle type thing.
Kia is a bit rare where I am so you might find more direct experience by posting a new post and title it "Kia Rear Wiper comes on by itself"
Good luck, Tom Greenleaf

Hi Tom
Friend of mine has accord that stalled when accellerating and will not restart. I am not even getting a pop with starting fluid or anything. Oil was very low. Is there a low oil cut-out switch? Is is possible that the timing belt/chain is toast. I can turn it over, but it sounds terrible, and without any spark I'm thinking that the distributor is run off the upper cam, no belt, no go. Any experience?
Thanks,
JIm

Message: I don't think there is a low oil shut down. Hard to see timing belt but you can see if distributor rotor turns with engine cranking. Should that be the case the engine should crank like the plugs are out if it doesn't turn.
Some engines become Lawn Ornaments over a broken belt as the valves crash into the pistons. I don't think Honda made one of those. Good luck, Tom

Message: Honda cam and valve timing is interference type, in other words, if the belt broke or slipped on accelleration, the valves and pistons contacted. there is no oil pressure safety system, the distributor rotor check is a good idea. I have even seen Honda camshafts break when run too long on low or no oil.
Good luck,

Message: Hi Tom
Hope you can advise me on a problem I'm having.
I own an 88 Chevy Celebrity wagon. 2.5L with air.
It has less than 50,000 original miles.
The problem is that the charging light is staying on. I took the battery and altinator in for a check and was told that the altinator is not charging at 100%, but it was still sufficient. The battery however was shot.
I got a new battey, and the light went off, for a day. The light is now back on,though it went out once for about two minutes.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance for your time.

It has a new air filter, spark plugs and wires. And I'm baffled as to what the problem could be. anybody have a suggestion? Thanks!

Message: We have a 1990 Honda Prelude. A few months ago it started running the battery down while it's just sitting park-- overnight or in the 10 hours my husband is at work. We bought a new battery, still had the problem. Had the battery checked and replaced due to a bad cell. Still having the problem. If we undo the positive battery cable while it sits, then there is no problem. The FASTEN SEATBELT and DOOR AJAR lights stay on all the time the car is running so we are wondering if there is a short there. Today someone suggested that the voltage regulator might be the problem.
Can you tell me what the problem might be and how to find it?
