Subject: 2002 Astro Hatch IP: Logged
Message: The rear hatch on my wife's '02 Astro is stuck on the drivers side. When you push the electric button on the rear door you acn hear the right side release, however the left side stays latched. How do I go about opening the door to replace the switch? What is my best plan of attack?
Thanks,
Jeff

Message: Latching mechanisms. Lots of vehs have corroded ones that prevent opening the door. This makes as you both know very difficult to get the panel off to fix the problem. Some latches will need replacement - others can be lubed up again.
Start with WD-40 thru any close access to the mechanism and you might get it open in some time. You can bend the plastic nozzle with heat to make it spray different direction out of you sight.
If that doesn't work - I suggest that auto body shops are best at getting a door or hatch open with the least damage. Bring clothes line or something to get to where you are going to work on it if you can do that safely. You can fool/trip the latch so it wont catch until you fix it. Test it before you put the panel back on!
Suggestion for all - lube latches and hinges a few times a year! These problems are common as nobody ever does that anymore. It used to be part of routine service of a "Grease Oil and Filter" but has been lost right along with full serve gas stations. Good luck to both prior posts to get this fixed and prevent the next one. If one did it others may follow, Tom Greenleaf

Message: I've recently purchased a 1998 astro and the remote works all locks except the hatch (which I can't open yet) and the power lock switches on the front doors are inoperable other than with the remote. Any suggestions?

Message: We have a 1998 Astro which had the rear hatch problem. upon removing the inside pull handle and cover, you should be able to get to the rods that go from the key switch to the latches themselves. We found one of our rod's popped out of the switch linkage (a plastic type holder). By pulling on the rods with some pliers, you should be able to open the hatch. Once you have the hatch open, you need to remove the entire hatch inside panel (be carefull as it breaks easy. Some screws, some snaps). I popped my rod back in and was OK for a couple of months when it did it again (I believe it all started from to many door slams in the past!). I put the rod back in again and dabbed some JB Weld on the tip so that it could not pop out again. So far so good! GOOD LUCK!
