Subject: 1993 Ford Aerostar Stuck Sliding Door IP: Logged
Message: What is wrong with my door? I closed it one day and it hasn't opened since. I took the panel off and could not figure out what was wrong just by looking. Does any one know what might be wrong or how to fix it? Does the whole door need to be replaced? It is such a hassel trying to get the kids and the baby in and out through the passanger door. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Message: Greetings, Bob and Shannon.
I also have a 1993 Ford Aerostar that has a stuck sliding door. We removed the cover to the door and the rod that goes back to the lock is still in place. We don't know what to think. The manual we consulted(Haynes) doesn't have any helpful information. How can we fix it? Any ideas you may have would be appreciated.
Richard

Message: Hi Richard, So sorry to hear about you door trouble. Mine is still messed up I guess I will eventually have to take it to a shop and get to fixed. I had the same problem when I removed the cover everything still looked like it was in place and I also tried looking at a manual which was Chilton's (sp?) and saw absolutely nothing to help. I have search and search on the web and still have not found a solution. It is a real bummer and I am afraid it will cost the big bucks to get it fixed. If you find out any new info please let me know.

Message: Can't speak for Aerostar but have seen other Ford products with the child lock thing that's in the jamn get screwed up. If it's halfway (between on or off) the door won't open from in or out! Of course you need to get the door open to place that switch where you want it. A body shop could probably be a good bet to get the door open without damage. If it is that switch pick the position you want and tape it hard! Kids play with anything or it could just get bumped.
I hope that's all it is for all of you, Tom Greenleaf

Message: I have a "93 Ford Aerostar as well and had problems with the door getting disconnected. I tried to put it back several times but it still goes off the hinges. I decided to bring it to the Ford shop and they changed the hinges and everything which caused me $300. It was really worth it taking it there instead of trying to fix it yourself and still end up with a broken door.

Message: I HAVE RECENTLY ACCUIRED A 1990 AREOSTAR AND ON THE 3RD DAY SHUT THE SLIDING DOOR AND IT HASNT OPENED SINCE. I KNOW MY WAY AROUND A VEHICLE BUT THIS HAS GOT ME STUMPED. AS YOU HAVE STATED THE REPAIR MANUALS DONT HELP AT ALL, AND THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOP MANUAL DOESNT ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM OUTRIGHT. HAVE YOU OR ANY OF THE OTHERS BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM, BY DIY OR SHOP MAKING REPAIRS? ANY INFORMATION AND OR ADVISE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. AND IN TURN IF I CAN FIX THIS I WILL POST WHAT WAS INTAILED.
THANKS FRANK STOKES

Message: I have had the same problem on 2 different 1989's.
I got the first one open with a tire iron, I had to raise and jerk the back end of it around quite a bit. After I got it open I replaced a bottom roller and the latch, it worked fine after that. For the second one I have shyed away from the tire iron due to all the damage I did but then again I do not have it open yet either... I was actually looking here for help

Message: I finally fixed the sliding door On my 1993. The door latch actuating Arm was bent, not allowing it to release the striker pin. I only found this out afterwards. while in a local Junkywd, we purchased a latch, Striker pin and plate. I took off the back passenger side panel, allowing me access to the plate the striker screws into. Then, using a air-driven grinder, WE cut a slot into the side of the plate. releasing the striker pin. at this point we took off the three bolts that hold the middle track on. THE DOOR SWUNG OUT LIKE A REGULAR DOOR, KEPT IT SUPPORTED AND Replaced the Pin and plate and latch. The door works great now. This method was a measure of last resort.

DO I NEED A NEW CABLE, OR DO YOU THINK THE TROUBLE IS IN THE SHIFTER COLUMN...BUT WHERE?

Message: I have a 1994 Ford Aerostar and the sliding door was stuck closed. After removing the trim from the door and studying the lock I realized the latch mechanism was in the rear of the sliding door. I then removed the window from the sliding door and then I was able to separate the metal. I then inserted a metal rod between the separated metal and push on the lever connected to latch mechanism and pop open the door. I greased up the lock and put everything back together. It's been working fine for a week now.
