there could be a leak in your exhaust somewhere. the fumes make their way into the car no problem. check for leaks or breaks and replace as necessary. ive had the same issue on a 90.

Yes, we had the exact same thing happening in
our old 1993 Mazda 323.There was a big crack in
the flex pipe and so lots of exhaust was spewing
out and making it's way up and into the cabin of
the vehicle.We had to roll down the window now
and then to counter the fumes.Makes sense because
the flex pipe(which has a flexible mesh-like
metal section on it like a shock-absorber) is
located right under and beside the engine where
the main exhaust pipe comes out of your engine.
This is likely your problem but definately
there is a rusty leak somewhere along your long
exhast pipe thats causing most of the fumes to
come out somewhere other than your muffler.
