The Jeep died out today, I put a new battery in it and the alternator started to smoke, The jeep did start but the volt meter inside would not go above 9 on the meter, Turned Jeep off and the alternator still smoked, so I took the battery cables of the battery, was concerned the car would catch on fire. Is the problem in the alternator or elsewere. 1989 Jeep Laredo 4x4 in line 6cyl. Thanks

Would you have a diagram or step by step instructions on how the Serpentine belt goes around the AC unit, alternator, and etc? My friend swapped out his alternator on his 1989 Cherokee(4.0) and we tried to place the belt back on.
