ooh guys i got a doozey for ya!! i have been working on cars all my life, and lemme tell ya,im at my whitts end on this one!! i'll start from the beginning,i drive a 96 VW jetta trek edition, keep in mind that treks were actually built in germany,so all my computer codes come up in german....well the trouble started with a random quiver at idle, eventually to a hesitation upon acceleration and a check engine code,so i hooked it up to my VAGCOM and the check engine code was "rear 02 sensor" the one behind the cadi, and also a "random misfire" code came up,so i crawl up under my car and sure enough something had hit the o2 sensor and cracked it,and the computer showed that it was stuck wide open at its highest voltage, but honestly i have never seen an o2 sensor make a difference in how a car runs,so i blamed it on the "random misfire" code and left the o2 sensor alone, well as you know a "random misfire" usually means one of these things,cap,rotor,plugs,wires...so i vowed to change them in the next week or so,well in that week that i procrastinated the car went to shit,i would take off from a stop light and if i accelerated too fast the car would bog and buck at me and eventually cut off,and it was a beast to start back up!!!! thinking this was way too severe to be a spark problem i shot for the obvious and tested my fuel pump "which was fine" and replaced the fuel filter "which did nothing"..well at that point i remembered a problem a friend had that sounded similar to mine, mass air flow sensor,so well i replaced that too,no luck,so then i was back to blaming it on spark,so i replaced my cap, rotor, wires and plugs, and wouldnt ya know it,it worked!! or so it seemed anyway!! the car still had that annoying little quiver at idle, but for about a month the car wouldnt cut off or spudder, but just last week "raining its ass off" my car did the same thing, after the 3rd time bucking and spuddering and cutting off,it wouldnt start back up,and on my 7 mile walk to the nearest gas station i sware the cows on the side of the road were telling me to drive the car into a river!!! but no seriously, only 2 things i can point my finger at are the coil, which has a crack in the cover "but that crack has been there for like 2 years" and the computer, but usually in audi/vw if the computer craps out,it craps out,the car wont run at all,so im hesitant to blame it on that...i dunno, lemme know what you guys think! thanks for your time!

With engine cool and idling, try spraying some household window cleaner at suspect - cracked coil and see if it arcs or makes any difference. It shouldn't. Replace it if anything changes.

Good luck, Tom Greenleaf

PS: That was quite a dissertation and you did use one word that I don't wan't to see at an auto site. Please refrain from that in the future.

hey Tom,first off sorry about the "s" word in my first posting,i didnt even realize i said it!! wont happen again.......well i "very nervously haha" sprayed the cracked coil, and it did nothing,i even made sure to do it at night so if it would arc i would see it,but yeah no luck, however i did get some interesting news from volkswagen today,i started brainstorming,i pulled out the handwritten reciept i made when i bought the car from a guy roughly seven months ago,i looked his adress up on mapquest, and just out of desperation i pulled up the nearest volkswagen dealership to his house and gave them a call, they put in the VIN# of my car,and bingo, the car had been there 2 weeks before i bought it,2 check engine codes came up "throttle adaptation limit reached" & "evap cannister",the mechanic that worked on the car stated in the work order "customer requested check engine light to be reset, and problems not to be corrected"....i have no idea what either of these codes mean, could they be my problem?

Mike, I have a 2001 Jetta 4 cyl. T that is doing exactly the same thing.(Why I am here searching the enternet) I just stopped by schucks and used their Auto X ray. Was free and they let me do it myself. WELL, I have cylinder mis-fires in 1, 2, 4, and 3. I looked to change the spark plugs a couple days ago and don't even know where they are at. Must be down underneith by the oil pan.??
Probably requires a special tool and Gumby type joints to use??

Also, Throttle control Motor Lock Fault. Sounds expensive. Schucks really wanted to sell me just the spark plugs...... but that is a dealer only Item. (16.00 online for 1 plug...The dealer must get double that.)

Anyhow I am just here to search for some helpful hints. Like you, I am afraid of the 1200 to 1500.00 dollar bill I might get from the dealer for residual overhead costs.

I bought this car new, my wife treated it like a baby, She had to have a Jeep and I am stuck commuting in the jetta since diesel for my truck hit 2.70 a gallon here in Wa. State. The Jetta has never had a problem since new until about 3 weeks ago. I just cracked 77,000 on it.

for the first car the problem is more than likely yoour coils. do more research on vwvortex about the coil issue. the crack is the giveaway. you wont always see the arc though when misting it and it could also be that the wiring harness for the coils itself is worn. the spark plugs for your 2001 4cyl are under the engine cover on the top of the engine. when you remove the plastic cover you will see your coil packs lined up in a row across the top of the valve cover. the spark plugs are under the coil packs which have to be pried up until you can pull them out. also you dont have to use the dealer plugs, do research by googling your cars sparkplugs. you can order them offline which would be the cheapest way.
