Subject: 96 Altima cold starting problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 96 Nissan Altima and recently, I've been having more and more difficulty getting the car started when the engine is cold. I live in Hawaii so I know it's not temp related. At one point, it seemed that if I pump the pedal a few times before starting the engine, it started with relative ease. So figuring on a fuel problem, I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter and even the injectors. My problem still continues to get worse. I have good secondary spark and have changed out the spark plugs as well. The engine also starts fine if the engine is warm. When the engine is cold, if I don't pump the gas (and recently, even if I do) the car cranks strong but doesn't start. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Thanks.

Message: Aloha,
To a car's engine, even your usual temps are cold! Pumping the gas pedal on a fuel injected car should make no difference.
Fuel injection uses a "cold enrichment" system that detects the engines temp and adjust how much fuel to give it like a choke would in carb vehicles. The sensor should be near the thermostat. Check for connections and basics and go from there, Good luck, Tom Greenleaf
