I have a 95 chev lumina. Was driving and noticed the car temp gauge was through the roof. I had only been driving for about 5 minutes so I wouldn't even think the car had enough time to get that hot. Got out checked antifreeze in resivour tank. everything was fine. Removed cap from radiator it was empty. Filled it and went on my way. All was fine but I noticed my car is only blowing out cold air. Next day Radiator was empty resivor tank still full. Any idea whats going on?? The car is not worth putting much money into.

Hi,

Obviously you have a leak - hopefully simple one. Keep radiotor full at the cap. It can take a few warm up and cool down cycles to get the air out. Actually driving the car around a bit with lots of turns and starts and stops (safely) really help purge the air and heater should work again - keep in on and if you feel it go cold it's likely that you are low on coolant, even when car is running hot. Use only 50/50 strength anti-freeze and keep some - gal or more pre mixed in car! If you have to add to a hot enging do so VERY slowly with it running but after it cools down. Use real caution with that as it can flash boil right back out of the radiator.

It this car is junky and you don't want to repair the leak you can try some sealer in radiator but only use 1/3 to 1/2 of what the container says. This stuff can cause its own problems. It wont fix most head gasket problems or a water pump. You drive the car after you add this if you try that. If you have a serious leak the system will not pull coolant from the resevoir which can also happen with a bad radiator cap.

Good luck, Tom Greenleaf

The GM 3.1 engines have a big problem with blown intake manifold gaskets which costs about $800. to fix. If you let it go to far, the head gasket could go or the block cracks.

GM knows they have a problem but won't extend the warranty.

Good luck
