Message: The radio may have loss its natural ground and is finding ground through the clocks back light circuit.
Go to the plug on the back of the radio and check out these wires for proper ground and feeds. Do all these tests with the radio unplugged and if they are not as described replace the radio.
With a test light connected to battery positive and the black wire the test light should light, if not find out where it has lost connection to ground.
Now switch the test light to battery negative and turn the ignition to the run position. Connect the test light to the yellow wire the test light should light, if not check the 15-amp radio fuse at the under dash fuse panel, if the fuse is ok, check the wiring for an open.
Next turn the ignition off, leave the test light connected to battery negative and test the orange wire the test light should light. If not, check the 15-amp stop/hazard fuse in the fuse panel. If it’s ok check the 10-amp inline fuse, that is taped to the outside of the wiring harness somewhere between the fuse panel and the radio. If it’s ok, check for open in the orange wire.
Next would be the light circuit, leave test light connected to battery negative, turn on the parking lights, then test the brown and gray wires the test light should light. One should light the test light at a constant brightness the other will dim, as you would turn the dash lights brighter or dimmer at the headlight switch.
You didn’t mention any problem with the dash lights not functioning properly so I’m assuming that circuit is ok.
Dan.
