Steve sorry guy I got real busy at work and didn’t have a chance to post. I did look up the system though and you could start by checking all the fuses.
When you push the 4x4 button you are actually putting in a request to the transfer case control module. The module looks at different inputs and then decides whether you are allowed to have 4x4 or not.
So I don’t think just a wiring diagram will help you a lot unless you understand the principles of operation of the system.
If I get a chance tomorrow I look up the procedure of how to get flash codes out of the module. Unless you know which terminals on the ALDL are J and A, if so you could jumper them and pull the codes (if any) and we’ll go from there.
Dan.

hi Dan,
So The switch is going straight to the computer(PCM)? or dose the 4x4 have its own module?

The 4x4 stopped working few weeks ago ... So i replaced transfer case switch(because someone said the could be the problem) the switch was $14 so I did... and still didn't work after I drove around the block few times then It started to work again. Well it only worked for 2 days(sometimes it did and something it didn't) then it died again.

I think there might be a loose wire or something or maybe a bad vac hose ( don't know where to look without a a diagram)

But lets try the flash code thing... I know nothing about this... If you get the procedures it would be great...If your too bussy don't worry about it

Steve the transfer case has its own module (computer) it uses inputs from the 4X4 switch, vehicle speed sensor, park/neutral switch and an encoder switch.
To get flash codes you’ll have to find the ALDL plug and jumper terminals A and J.
The ALDL is the same plug that you would use to plug in a scan tool. When you find it and you’re looking strait at the 12 terminals “A “would be on the top row to the far right, ”J” would be third from the left on the bottom row.
Take a jumper wire, paper clip anything and connect A and J, turn the ignition to the run position.
There will be about 3 second delay and then the 4X4 light may flash if there is a code present.
There are only four codes available, numbering 1 to 4, for example if you had a 2 code the light would flash flash and then a 3 second pause and flash flash it will keep repeating.
An other example, lets say you have a one and a three code the light would flash then a three second pause then flash flash flash then three second pause then flash and so on it will also keep repeating.
I tried to post the wiring diagram but I can’t seem to be able to, so I’ll email it to you.
Let me know what or if there are any codes.
Dan.

Can you email me that diagram as well? I am having a very similar problem. I can get my Blazer to go into 4 wheel drive if I unplug the transfer case module and then plug it back in.

I am having problems the 4wd as well. 94 S10 Blazer, push button four wheel drive. I hit the button to put it into 4wd and nothing happens the light doesnt even come on. I was able to get it into 4 Lo for a while when it was in neutral but that doesnt even work anymore. I brought it to a shop to have some diagnostics run on it and they told me absolutely nothing. The ABS also doesnt work i dont know if this a seperate problem or if its tied to the 4wd issue. Any ideas?

I have a 1994 S10 4X4 LS (370+ Kms on it by the way). The 4x4 quit working over four years ago. Much like the fellow above, I replaced the dashboard switch, thinking that ths might be my problem. I was wrong. With the old switch in place and also with the new switch, when I pressed (for example) the 4x4 High button, it would flash several times and I could hear the module (electric motor) under the truck trying to lock in but nothing would engage. After some time (weeks), I found that whenever I pressed (for example) the 4x4 High button that both 4x4 buttons would flash and again nothing would engage. It should be noted, that from time to time I could get the 4x4 to lock in but it was purely luck. Infact, I would sometimes press the 4x4 High button and it would lock into 4x4 Low and vice versa. I came to the conclusion that the trasfer case module was not working correctly, so I pulled it off to investigate. Sure enough, the entire mechanisim was fubar internally. Allow me to explain as best I can...

On the side of the transfer case, a small round stud with two flats milled on it sticks out of the casing. The encoder motor, (perhaps also known as the module - depending on what part of the world you are from) fastens to the side of the transfer case, while the forementioned stud on the transfer case locks into a slotted depression within the module. This slotted depression rotates CW & CCW depending on which button is pressed on the dashboard. In turn, while this slotted depression rotates, so does the stud on the side of the transfer case. The stud's rotation locks the transfer case into one of three locations (2 Wheel, 4x4 High, 4x4 Low). The gears which rotated the slotted depression within the module were in dandy shape when I pulled the modue apart to investigate, however, the slotted depression which the gears rotated was not. Basically, the components which locked the driving gear to the slotted depression had broken free. I tried to fix it but with no luck. So I fixed it by tossing the whole unit in the trash can. Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you feel about it) my front hubs were still locked. This allows me to crawl under my truck and with a 9/16" open end wrench, I can rotate the stud sticking out of the transfer case (it has two flats milled on it) into one of the three positions. Bare in mind, if you are heading off to the mud pit, it is best to do this BEFORE you get stuck! Unless you can see through mud and can hold your breath for extended periods of time, once you're in over your head you are not going to crawl under the truck to change gears! LoL....By the way, the stud inwhich I speak of is roughly located between the break pedal and the seat under the driver's side floorboard.

Give it a shot...Cheers!!

P.S. I never bought a new encoder motor (module) because the dealer wanted $600.00 CDN for it at the time and even the salvage yard wanted $300.00 for it. Today I am sure the price has dropped considerably!

I'm having the same problem with my '98. Doesn't matter which button I push, they both just flash a few seconds and I here clicking, but then it just goes back to 2wd. I checked the fluid and it was a little low so I drained it and put in new ATF III as that is what the manual called for (but I'm not for sure that is what came out of it). I guess I'll check to see if that module is turning. If that doesn't help I'm taking it to the dealership and I'll let ya'll know.
