Have a 1997 toyota corolla with problems. Will run 8 miles, then dies, and will not restart for a lengthy period of time, if at all. Have changed the following parts: distributor, caps, plugs, wires, starter, fuel pump, fuel filter, and ignition coil. Currently down over $500. 3 mechanics have worked on it and all return the vehcile stating they can't fix it. Could it be electrical, or perhaps the computer module. PLEASE HELP.............any advise appreciated. Thank you.............

Argg! This stuff happens now and then and stinks. You have ruled out a lot of possiblilities which really doesn't hurt you as they are nice to be newer. The car does sense it's enging temp and the computer makes adjustments on the info. Just a guess - cheap temp sensor near thermostat may be sending wrong info to the car's computer as you stated at about 8 miles (car should be warm) it has an attitude!
Not all problems will show a code on the computer, but if this was mine the cold sensor would be history just to rule that out too. Good luck, Tom Greenleaf

I have a problem with my Corolla (1997) - Infrequently when I turn the key for the car the engine doesn’t start up, turn the key a few times more it starts up. Most often it will start up at the first roll of the key without any problems but sometimes it doesn’t. There seems to be no consistent pattern as to when the car makes up its mind to start at the first roll of the key and then the occasion when it decides not to start until I have had to toggle the key a few times. The only pattern is that it is usually (not always) in the morning that this problem occurs for the remainder of the day it is fine. Can anyone help cos its annoying and I don’t want to pay the mechanic an arm and leg for something that might be easy to solve. Also the car is fitted with an alarm which doesn’t allow the engine to start until a wand (on the keychain) is passed underneath the steering column where the trigger is thus allowing the alarm to be disabled and the car to start – I don’t think the alarm has anything to do with this but I thought I better mention it for a more complete background.
